Dumpster Safety: Three Ideas To Implement When Renting A Dumpster

Whether you are renting a roll-off dumpster for a home renovation project or for a business, there are some safety concerns that should be taken into consideration before you start placing trash and debris in the container. Here are some ideas to implement that can help ensure the safety of those working on your property as well as the safety of the community in general.

Install A Perimeter Fence

A perimeter fence can help prevent people from accessing the dumpster when you aren't around to keep an eye on your property. For businesses, this might mean a permanent dumpster enclosure. If you are renting a dumpster for a construction project and won't need it after work is complete, consider renting a temporary fence. By using a fence, you can help keep dumpster divers at bay and prevent children from accessing the area as an impromptu playground.

Post No-Smoking Signs

Even if your staff or construction crew has a few people who smoke, it's important to keep people from smoking around the dumpster area. Wood, drywall, and other types of construction waste can be flammable, and having lit cigars or cigarettes too close can pose a fire hazard. If you operate a business, designate a smoking area or ask that people who smoke do so off of the property. If you are a homeowner having work done on your home, you can simply ask that no one smoke on your property. Post no-smoking signs on the dumpster or the fence surrounding it as a reminder to everyone.

Find A Sturdy Base

Dumpsters can get very heavy, particularly when filled with brick or concrete. To prevent damage to your property, it's important to make sure that your dumpster has a sturdy base to rest on. A driveway or parking lot can be sufficient, but you may find that you have no other choice but to place the dumpster on grass or soil. If this is true for you, partner with your dumpster rental company to find a solution that keeps the dumpster on steady ground. This might involve placing plywood down before rolling the dumpster onto the property, but there may also be other solutions as well. For example, your rental company may be able to suggest a bag dumpster instead of a traditional metal one.

Be sure that everyone using the dumpster is wearing protective gear, such as hard hats and eye goggles, to help prevent injuries. For more information about dumpster safety, contact your dumpster rental company to receive additional guidance.

About Me

Enjoying Our Environment

The last time I was on vacation, I found myself relaxing on a beach in the middle of the ocean. It was absolutely amazing, and I can completely understand how other people might become obsessed with the pleasures of the pacific. Unfortunately, half way through my relaxing afternoon, I saw a bird that was strangled in a plastic package, and I knew that I had to take action to protect the ocean. I began looking for different ways to protect the world around me, and it was really neat to see how much better things became when I focused my efforts on a single goal. Check out this blog for great tips on enjoying the environment.
